How to Cut Watermelon

A watermelon's round shape and slippery rind make it one of the easier fruits to cut badly, sliding knives and crushed flesh are usually a sign of skipping the flat-side setup. Cutting it into stable planks first solves almost every problem.

Steps

  1. 1Wash the whole watermelon under running water and dry it, since the knife will drag rind residue onto the flesh.
  2. 2Slice off both ends (the top stem area and the bottom) to create two flat, stable surfaces.
  3. 3Stand the watermelon upright on one flat end and slice off the rind in strips from top to bottom, following the curve of the fruit, until no white rind remains.
  4. 4Lay the peeled watermelon on its side and slice it into flat planks about 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick.
  5. 5Stack or lay the planks flat, then cut each one into a grid of cubes, first in one direction, then the other, at 1-inch intervals.
  6. 6For wedges instead of cubes, skip the peeling step and cut the whole watermelon in half, then into quarters lengthwise, then crosswise into wedges about 1.5 inches wide.

FAQ

How long does cut watermelon last in the fridge?

Cubed watermelon keeps 3-5 days in an airtight container, but it releases liquid over time, so drain it before serving if it's been stored more than a day.

What's the fastest way to cut watermelon for a crowd?

Cut it into wedges instead of cubes. Quartering the whole melon lengthwise and slicing crosswise into wedges takes under two minutes and skips peeling entirely.

Why does my watermelon fall apart when I cube it?

Overripe watermelon has softer flesh that separates along its internal seed lines. Cutting slightly smaller cubes and handling the pieces less helps them hold together.

Can I cut watermelon ahead of time for a party?

Yes, up to a day ahead. Store it in a sealed container in the fridge and keep it away from the door, where temperature swings speed up spoilage.
