How to Open a Wine Bottle Without a Corkscrew

The shoe method is the most reliable way to get a cork out with no tools at all: the bottle's own momentum against a padded, repeated impact pushes the cork out gradually instead of shattering it. It takes longer than a corkscrew and looks ridiculous, but it works on almost any standard cork.

Steps

  1. 1Cut or peel away the foil capsule covering the top of the cork so it doesn't tear or get pushed down with it.
  2. 2Remove one shoe with a thick, solid sole (a sneaker or boot works, a flip-flop does not) and place the bottom of the wine bottle inside it, base first.
  3. 3Find a solid wall, tree trunk, or fence post and hold the shoe with the bottle inside firmly against it, keeping the bottle as level and horizontal as possible.
  4. 4Strike the sole of the shoe against the wall repeatedly using firm, even hits, letting the impact transfer through the shoe into the base of the bottle.
  5. 5Stop every 10-15 hits to check the cork's progress; it will inch out slowly rather than pop.
  6. 6Once about half the cork is exposed, grip it firmly and twist while pulling to remove it the rest of the way by hand.

What if I don't have a shoe with a thick sole nearby?

A screw and a pair of pliers works as a backup: twist a long screw about three-quarters of the way into the center of the cork, then grip the exposed screw head with pliers and pull straight up.

Can I just push the cork into the bottle instead?

Yes, using the handle of a wooden spoon or a chunky knife handle to press the cork straight down into the bottle works, but it leaves cork floating in the wine, so pour through a strainer or fine sieve afterward.

Is it safe to use a house key to open wine?

It can work by twisting the key at an angle into the cork and levering it out, but it takes more force than the shoe method and carries a higher risk of the cork crumbling into small pieces.

Why does the shoe method work at all?

Each impact creates a small pocket of air pressure inside the bottle that pushes against the underside of the cork, gradually forcing it upward without direct contact with the cork itself.
