A Crunchwrap Supreme is a folded, grilled assembly built around a large flour tortilla wrapped around seasoned ground beef, melted nacho cheese, a crunchy tostada shell, cold lettuce and tomato, and sour cream, then sealed into a hexagon shape and toasted on both sides until the outer tortilla is golden and the inner shell stays crisp. It was popularized by Taco Bell but the construction, a hot filling layer, a structural crunch layer, and a cold topping layer, all folded into one portable pocket, is easy to replicate at home with a griddle or large skillet.

Varieties

The Doritos Locos version simply lines the tostada layer with crushed Doritos before assembly for extra crunch and flavor. A vegetarian version replaces the beef with seasoned black beans or a plant-based crumble and is otherwise identical in construction.

Buying tips

Buy tostada shells rather than substituting tortilla chips; chips shatter when the wrap is folded and won't hold a flat crunch layer. Choose burrito-size flour tortillas (10 to 12 inches) since standard taco-size tortillas are too small to fold fully around the fillings.

Storage

Assembled, unfried crunchwraps can be wrapped tightly in plastic and refrigerated for up to a day before grilling. Already-cooked crunchwraps lose their crunch quickly; store leftovers wrapped in foil in the fridge for up to two days and reheat in a dry skillet over medium heat to recrisp the outside rather than microwaving, which turns the shell soft.

How to use

Fold and grill as the classic handheld wrap, or build the same layers open-faced in a bowl for a low-effort version without the folding. The tostada-and-cheese layer also works on its own as a quick tostada topped with the same beef, lettuce, and sour cream.

What it pairs with

Serve with Mexican rice, refried or black beans, or a simple corn and lime salad. A squeeze of lime and hot sauce on the side balances the richness of the cheese and sour cream.

Nutrition

A homemade Crunchwrap Supreme runs roughly 500 to 650 calories depending on the tortilla size and amount of cheese and beef, with a significant share coming from refined carbs in the two starch layers (tortilla and shell). Swapping in a lean protein and light sour cream cuts fat without changing the structure.

FAQ

Why does my crunchwrap fall apart when I fold it?

The tortilla is usually too cold or too small. Warm the tortilla for about 10 seconds per side so it's pliable, and use a 10 to 12 inch burrito-size tortilla so there's enough overhang to fold six even pleats toward the center.

Can I bake a crunchwrap instead of pan-frying it?

Yes. Bake seam-side down on a parchment-lined sheet at 425°F (220°C) for about 10 to 12 minutes, flipping halfway, though the crust won't brown as evenly as it does in a hot skillet.

What keeps the tostada shell from getting soggy?

Layer the cold ingredients, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream, above the tostada shell, and add them right before folding rather than letting the wrap sit assembled for more than a few minutes before grilling.

Do I need a special pan to fold it into the hexagon shape?

No special equipment is needed; fold by hand into six overlapping pleats, then place it seam-side down in a lightly oiled skillet, which holds the fold closed as it cooks.
