Dirty Chai

A dirty chai is a chai tea latte with a shot of espresso added, usually poured on top so the dark coffee streaks through the lighter, spiced tea before it's stirred together. The name comes from the coffee 'dirtying' the clean spiced-tea flavor. It's built from three parts: chai concentrate (black tea steeped with spices like cardamom, cinnamon, clove, and ginger), steamed milk, and one or two shots of espresso.

Varieties

A dirty chai differs from a plain chai latte only by the added espresso; without it, it's just a chai latte. Some cafes also offer a 'dirty matcha' or 'dirty London fog' (Earl Grey latte plus espresso) built the same way, swapping the base tea but keeping the espresso shot.

Buying tips

Look for chai concentrates listing actual tea and whole spices near the top of the ingredient list rather than 'natural flavor' as the main flavoring; these taste noticeably less syrupy. For the espresso side, pre-ground espresso roast or espresso pods work fine if you don't have a machine that pulls true shots.

Substitutes

Storage

Bottled chai concentrate keeps in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks unopened per package date, and about 5 days once opened. Brewed espresso and finished dirty chai do not store well and should be made fresh; reheating espresso turns it bitter.

How to use

Combine roughly 3/4 cup steamed milk, 1/4 cup chai concentrate, and 1 to 2 shots of espresso poured on top for a standard 12-ounce dirty chai. For iced versions, use cold milk and chai concentrate over ice, then pour espresso over the top so it layers before stirring.

What it pairs with

Pairs well with anything spiced or slightly sweet: banana bread, oatmeal cookies, pumpkin muffins, or a plain buttered croissant that doesn't compete with the cardamom and clove.

Nutrition

A typical dirty chai carries caffeine from both the tea and the coffee, roughly 40 to 50 mg from the chai portion plus 63 mg per espresso shot, putting a one-shot cup around 100 to 115 mg total, more than a plain chai latte but usually less than a full drip coffee.

FAQ

Can I make a dirty chai with decaf espresso?

Yes, decaf espresso works the same way and still adds the coffee flavor and slight bitterness that defines the drink; the chai portion still carries its own small amount of caffeine from the black tea base.

How much espresso goes in a standard dirty chai?

Most cafes use a single shot (about 1 ounce) in a 12-ounce cup and a double shot in a 16-ounce cup, though the ratio is flexible since chai concentrate is already fairly assertive.

Why does my homemade dirty chai taste watery?

Chai concentrate is meant to be diluted with milk in roughly a 1:3 ratio; using it at full strength as your only tea base or over-diluting it with too much milk both throw off the balance, so measure rather than eyeballing.

Can I make dirty chai without an espresso machine?

Yes, a moka pot, an AeroPress with a fine grind, or double-strength instant espresso powder all get close enough to substitute for a machine-pulled shot.
